In the Company of the Courtesan

"You can't fault a novel that begins "Italy, 1526" and, narrated with
suppressed fury by Tom Hollander, it only gets better. When the army of the Holy Roman Emperor sacks Rome, Fiammetta Bianchini, the courtesan in question, loses all she has worked so hard to earn. She escapes with as many jewels as she and her trusty dwarf—the narrator—can swallow, and they make their way to Venice.

Here among the "slim-hipped" gondolas, she has to rebuild her career, but of course it is not so simple. A dishonest servant, a face from the past, a Jewish pawnbroker and a book of erotic engravings only serve to confuse matters. This is a wonderful novel: constructed by a craftsman and, except that it is quite rude, perfect to listen to on a long drive to Italy. Although Hollander's accents are all over the place, he is a brilliant narrator, able to capture the stroppy anger of a dwarf perfectly."
